Much as I am loving Croatia, it’s time both Kez and I saddled up old faithful, and took to the road again. Our route will continue down this beautiful coastal road … via Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro and Albania. At this point, we turn more directly towards Istanbul; shooting for Lake Ohrid – which has captured our imagination largely because of its name rather than through a travel recommendation.

The terrain certainly looks hilly – so we are expecting some challenging days as we shoot for Thessaloniki in Greece. We’ll then head directly east, tickling the border of Bulgaria – before going headlong towards Istanbul.

  1. Hi Laurence. Have enjoyed reading the journals and finding out how the last couple of weeks have gone. Sounds awesome! Good luck with the cycling through Greece and Turkey. Had a fantastic Geography trip to China and you will absolutely love the people and landscapes. They kept on stopping the pupils and asking for photos with their family members so I guess you’ll get seriously slowed down en route!! Their driving is pretty dubious (Miss Liv survived a collision in Shanghai) but you will have had plenty of practice by then! All the best, Pete

    • Cheers for the message Pete. It sounds like you had a pretty special field trip in China (I think our geography field trip went to Wales – oh how times have changed!!).

China is a VERY long way away, but is already giving me a fire in my belly. There’s just something about that place; so diametrically different in terms of culture/language – and yet fundamentally, so similar (everyone basically wants the same thing after all – safety and security for their family). There’s a huge amount of cycling to be done between here (Istanbul) and the Chinese border though…namely, I’ve still got hopes of cycling through the desolation and stark beauty of the Stans. The weather and the beurocracy may scupper the plan as it is getting rather late in the year; but if it is feasible, those thousands of km’s will be some of the most challenging and exhilarating that i’ll probably do on the whole trip.

I plan to leave Istanbul on about the 16th or 17th of this month. If you have Skype, I’ll be online a fair bit (visa applications/route research) – so feel free to add me (wanderlust_loz), and we can look at ways to get the kids involved once I emerge into China (where I imagine internet access will become far more widespread).

Many thanks for all the messages – much appreciated,

      Loz

Take care both of you . PS Still not sure some of the places you pitch up for the nightx
