Although my ride may seem like a very individual endeavour, in many ways, it isn’t. I have been extremely fortunate up to this point in my life. I am healthy, educated and safe from persecution and repression. I am the exception. The vast majority of the people in this world will never get to live in the comfort to which I am accustomed…or be given the opportunities that I have had.
Now although I would love it to be so, it is unrealistic to think that poverty can be eradicated. However, I believe every child should have the opportunity to survive, and to live in an environment that is conducive to health and well-being. With this in mind, I have decided to support three charities on my ride…each of which means a great deal to me.
The charities I am supporting:

We are an international maternal and child healthcare charity. We are dedicated to saving the lives of seriously ill pregnant women, children and babies. We work in countries afflicted by extreme poverty, helping to sustainably transform the management of emergencies, whilst also assisting the empowerment of healthcare professionals to effect systemic change.
Every person on Earth deserves a healthy environment and the fundamental benefits that nature provides. But our planet is experiencing an unprecedented drawdown of these resources, and it is only by protecting nature and its gifts – a stable climate, fresh water, healthy oceans and reliable food – that we can ensure a better life for everyone, everywhere.
“I have often dreamt that it would be so much nicer if there was no illness or poverty in the world, and that everyone was equal. Until that day arrives, I will continue to spend every waking hour trying to make a difference to the lives of the wonderful people of Bansang”
Anita Smith, (MBE, MRG) – Bansang Hospital Appeal
Why am I supporting these charities?
Proven Outcomes: I’m sure all of us feel great when we are fortunate enough to be in a postion to give to charity. There are few more compassionate and altruistic things one can do. However, giving to charities that are chasing the wrong kind of goals can often be more damaging than doing nothing at all. Having studied such things at university and beyond, I am quite sure the charities I have chosen are chasing the right kind of goals. & in their respective areas of expertise, they are all delivering proven outcomes, time and time again.
Cost-effectiveness: If i’m going to cycle half way around the world in support of a particular charity, I’ll be damned if they squander money on administration fees ! All three of the charities I am supporting are exceptionally cost-effective.
Project sustainability: I firmly believe that development efforts shouldn’t just focus on addressing the near-term issues. Without a focus upon long-term sustainability, any intervention will more than likely -sooner or later- end in failure. All three charities that I am supporting have placed a keen emphasis upon capacity building within the communities and regions in which they work. This not only provides education, training and opportunities for the indigenous population, but it also greatly increases the chances of a positive development outcome if/when the charity moves elsewhere.
